Packing my Running Bag

Since I am leaving Saturday and not returning until the Friday before the marathon, I thought I'd better pack my running bag for the race.
This is what I'm bringing:
Running clothes and shoes (of course)
Ipod
Body Glide
On-board nutrition (probably my cran-razz shot bloks)
Knee band
Gatorade
Timing Chip (well, I have to pick this up later)
Sunscreen (I got so burnt in the mini-marathon)
Camera (for Bill to take pics)
Facial Wipes (I always feel soooooo gross after a race)
Advil (for after, not before)
A Strechy Headband
Bobby pins
Chapstick
Brush (for afterwards...when my head gets sweaty my hair gets gross and tangly)

I know I am forgetting other things...
Can anyone think of anything else?

Hey AA,

LOVED that blog. I saw you were planning on bringing your IPOD. I don't think they allow them! I love my shuffle, but plan to leave it on raceday and just get caught up in the running moment without music to "distract" me. That is how I am justifying it is good to leave my shuffle at home. Good luck in London! I won't be able to run the 20 miler this weekend since I am going to Boston to cheer my husband on in the marathon. Have fun, take care, and stay off that injured list!

I was also reading that rule on flyingpigmarathon.com and though I can accept that I thought emailing and asking wouldn't hurt. The response I received back was "It is against USATF rules. Anything in your ears is not allowed." I finally found the USATF web site and in the top link of
this bullet list USATF Competition Rules, Article III (Rules of Competition), Section IV (Long Distance and Road Events), Rule 240 (Course Certification) shows the following rule in it (however someone please correct me if I'm looking at the wrong list link) I found this:

(b) The use by athletes of video or audio cassette recorders or players, TV’s,
CD or DVD players, radio transmitters or receivers, mobile phones, computers,
or any similar devices in the competition area shall not be permitted.
In long distance running, this is not a mandatory rule, but is a strong

suggestion as a guideline for safety reasons.

So technically it is a suggested rule that is unfortunately being embraced. Ultimately it is in the Flying Pig rules list so whatever hairs I'm splitting doesn't matter. Headphones or not I'm looking forward to my first Marathon at the Flying Pig.

HI EMILY!
I love reading your blog...very motivational! I just got off the phone with the Marathon office and you are allowed to have your Ipod and headphones. They strongly advise you not to have headphones because "if there was a need of someone getting your attention, course advisors/police officers/etc, while running you wouldn't hear them." (i dunno...thats the reason he gave me) You will NOT be dimissed from the marathon if you have headphones and Ipod. So just thought I would clear up the rumors of not being able to have your Ipod. So, CIN TWIN1 bring your iPod if you want! :) I really don't know what I would've done if I couldn't listen to my favorite jams! haha Good luck with the rest of your training...this is going to be my first marathon too!

I always carry an extra set of batteries in my pack, even though I put in a fresh set right beforehand. I just can't have my tunes die mid-race. That'd be a tragedy for me! And, I know what the pig office said too; they also told me "No way" to the music but told my friend that it was "strongly discouraged." We're both wearing our tunes. Just let them try to stop me! :-) Best of luck to all!!!!

About the ipod...
It is in the rules, but mostly for the "professional" runners (I didn't know what else to call them).

Anyway, I ran the Pig last year with my iPod and didn't turn it on until mile 19. There was so much going on that I didn't want to miss it. And when I ran New York in the fall I didn't turn it on at all. But, I was glad to have it since I trained with it. Just a security thing.

One last thing, if you do listen to it while you run the race, just turn it off for the last mile. Enjoy running to the finish and hearing the crowds. There is nothing like it!

Hi Emily--I found your link on the Pig website. I'm also running the Pig, my 10th marathon and my fifth in seven months (I don't advise doing that ;) )

I always carry $20 with me, just in case you need to stop at a gas station for Gatorade, or cab fare. I've never had to use it, but you just never know what might spring up.

Good luck and have a fun race!
